Idaho air quality regulators are accepting comments on a Georgia-based company's application for a permit for two electrical generators it hopes to build that would be powered by methane from Ada County's landfill.
G2 Energy has submitted an application, which is available for review at the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality's Boise Regional Office, 1445 N. Orchard. G2 has proposed to build two generators that will run on the methane produced at the Hidden Hollow landfill as garbage decomposes.
Experts expect the two plants will generate an average of 3.2 megawatt hours of electricity a month, enough to power 2,400 homes. Currently the methane, considered a greenhouse gas that scientists say contributes to global warming, is simply burned off.
The company is working with Idaho Power Co. and the Idaho Public Utilities Commission as well as Ada County.
People will have 30 days to comment, then DEQ officials will develop the permit, which also may be available for public comment if people request it, DEQ officials said in a press release.
