Electrical Substation Technologies

High Voltage Substation

September 29, 2021

Live online event hosted by The Electricity Forum.

The focus of our Electrical Substation Live Online Forum will be substation reliability, security and stability. The changing environment in the energy sector creates a need for substation system operators to be able to robustly evaluate the impact that possible measures have on the dependability of supply of their networks. Electrical substations are is considered an important part of the power grid, and this has gained significant focus for electrical power system planners and operators to improve reliability. Our FREE Live Online Forum is a great way to learn from leading Electrical Substation professionals who are speaking on subjects about current or future technologies for reliable power substations.

45 minutes presentation includes 10 minutes of Q&A.

Critter Guard – Distinctly Different Animal Mitigation
Watch the presentation on YouTube
There seem to be about as many animal guards/deterrents on the market as there are different types of electrical equipment and different animal types. Each size & voltage rating of common components such as bushings, insulators, terminals, bus-bars, transformers, switches, reclosers, etc. require a different type or size of cover or guard. That's a lot to keep track of when specifying an animal mitigation product. This presentation will provide a distinctly different approach, from Critter Guard, that's been extremely successful in preventing animal access while offering a more standardized solution.

Substation Innovation: Leveraging transformer technology to remove costs and risk
Watch the presentation on YouTube
A technology briefing on eliminating fires risks and costs from electrical substation projects with MIDEL ester liquids.
The presentation compares MIDEL ester-filled transformers with mineral oil counterparts, and explains how to capture costs savings in design. And, what global insurance mutual FM Global has to say about mitigating risk in this way, as well as what the changes mean for insurance risk levels and client premiums. Includes real world case studies.

A New Way to Deal With High Moisture in Your GIS - Welcome to Online SF6 Dehydration
Watch the presentation on YouTube
Pure SF6 is an excellent insulator in electric switchgears, but humidity in the gas decreases its insulating ability and can also result in very harmful decomposition products for humans, machinery, and the environment. New technologies now allow for an alternative to traditional methods, offering the option to drying gas while the equipment remains online.

This presentation looks at a revolutionary process where with little to no downtime or human interaction, gas is extracted from the equipment and dried, while harmful by-products are also removed. The results of several case studies and field tests will be shown, which will cover aspects such as efficiency, safety, environmental aspects and economic impacts.

SDT Ultrasound Solutions

Ultrasound for Electrical Power Reliability
Watch the presentation on YouTube

Unreliable electric power systems not only cost millions of dollars in downtime and repairs, they have the potential to maim and kill. Reliability leadership must focus on the preservation of both physical and human assets. Because everyone has the right to a safe work environment and to return home unharmed.

Allan is going to talk about how ultrasound helps with electric power reliability. His presentation will cover

  • What is ultrasound?
  • What is PD?
  • What are the consequences when PD is not detected and remediated on time?
  • What are the risks of doing nothing?
  • How ultrasound helps
  • Product demonstration
