Reliant Energy Lights On! School Supply Drive invites Dallas ISD supporters to donate school supplies at drive-by drop-offs, Staples stores, and district sites on August 17, helping back-to-school readiness for elementary and middle students.

Context and Background

A Dallas ISD and Reliant Energy drive providing elementary and middle students with essential back-to-school supplies.

  • August 17, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., drive-by donations accepted.
  • Six Dallas ISD sites and three Staples stores.
  • Reliant Energy donating $5,000 for supplies.
  • Benefits elementary and middle school students.
  • Supplies distributed to every elementary and middle school.

Reliant Energy will help Dallas Independent School District elementary and middle school students prepare for the start of school by organizing the inaugural “Lights On!” School Supply Drive and contributing $5,000 to purchase additional supplies.

On August 17 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Dallas ISD will leave the “lights on” to accept drive-by school supply donations at six Dallas ISD facilities and three Staples stores, even as Texas electricity pricing remains a topic of debate.

The Reliant Energy “Lights On!” School Supply Drive will benefit elementary and middle school students who otherwise might not have adequate supplies for the school year.

Reliant Energy will present a $5,000 check to the Dallas ISD as part of powering the future of Texas through community support for the purchase of additional school supplies to be distributed among the school supply drive site locations. After the close of the supply drive, Dallas ISD will distribute supplies to each of its elementary and middle schools as campuses explore initiatives like school roofs go solar to cut energy costs.

“One of our company’s core values is respect for the communities in which we live and work,” said Reliant Energy President Jason Few. “We hope the Dallas community will partner with us through the ‘Lights On!’ School Supply Drive to make a difference in the lives of young people and families who may be struggling to make ends meet, as interest grows in recession-proof jobs within the energy sector.”

“Reliant Energy has been a solid partner for the Dallas ISD in helping us meet unmet needs when we have needed corporate support, including models like energy conservation programs with major retailers,” said Dallas ISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa. “Reliant Energy sponsored both of our elementary and secondary science fairs this year, and has stepped up again to support us through the collection of much-needed school supplies.”
