New Power Plant Opens in Windsor, Ontario

- A new 580 megawatt combined cycle gas fired power plant in Windsor Ontario is now fully operational, announced recently by Brighton Beach Power L.P., a limited partnership formed by ATCO Power Ltd. and Ontario Power Generation (OPG).

Brighton Beach Power completes commissioning of power plant in Windsor, Ontario Construction of the power plant required approximately two million labour hours that peaked with 775 people on site early in 2004.

According to a Canada Newswire press release, the economic benefits to Ontario, and Windsor in particular, are substantial with capital expenditures of over $500 million.

The release also stated the ongoing benefits from the operation of the plant with 32 permanent employees living and working in the Windsor area. The plant is now fully capable of supplying power to the Ontario grid with the commissioning complete.

Coral Energy Canada Inc. will exclusively supply natural gas and market the electricity generated by the plant.

"ATCO, OPG and Coral are to be congratulated for providing Ontario with this state-of-the-art combined cycle gas plant," said Energy Minister Dwight Duncan. "I am particularly pleased that the Windsor area has been able to benefit so much from this project."
