A hydro vault fire has left many homes in the Yonge St. and Eglinton Ave. E. area without power.

Police say the vault burst into flames at around 5:40 a.m., near a cluster of apartment buildings on Erskine Ave., west of Mt. Pleasant Rd.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze, but power was out in the area until late in the morning.

The affected area runs north of Eglinton Ave. to Alexandra Blvd, and just west of Yonge St. to about Mt. Pleasant Rd.

“Hydro is aware of it and they’re working overtime to rectify it,” said Toronto police Const. Marc Kalteis.

No injuries were reported but a few thousand people have been affected by the outage.

A set of downed power lines near Chaplin Cres. and Eglinton Ave. W. could also be contributing to the problem, according to Toronto Hydro.

The Chaplin-area outage began at around 5:30 a.m. and is affecting roughly 265 people. That area is bordered by Forest Hill Rd. and Spadina Rd. on the east, and running southeast along Dunvegan Rd. until about Frybrook Rd.

Investigators are currently looking into the cause of the outages, a process that may take several days.

Nova Scotia can't order electric utility to lower power rates, minister says

HALIFAX - The province can't ask Nova Scotia Power to lower its rates to ease the financial pressure on out-of-work residents because it lacks the authority to take that kind of action, the provincial energy minister said Thursday.

"The conversations are ongoing with Nova Scotia Power," he said after a cabinet meeting.

When asked if the Liberal government would order the utility to lower electricity rates as households and businesses struggle with the financial fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, Mombourquette said there was nothing he could do.
