A transformer exploded in the basement of a Guildwood Village apartment building in the early morning hours, forcing the evacuation of more than 100 people from lower level suites.

Emergency crews were called to the Kingston Rd. building, near Eglinton Ave. E., around 2:30 a.m. March 19, after a Toronto Hydro transformer blew up in the basement, Toronto police Sgt. Rob Duthie said.

Smoke billowed from the area of the blast, although there was no active fire.

Three TTC buses were called in to shelter residents as fire crews inspected the building for any further risk.

Toronto Hydro is also on the scene, restoring power lost to residents in the vicinity.

No injuries have been reported, and Kingston Rd. has since been reopened both ways.
