Quebec set sights on C$1 billion hydro-power plant
- PERIBONKA, Quebec - The Quebec provincial government and power giant Hydro-Quebec said Wednesday they will fund studies on building a C$1 billion ($650 million) hydro-electricity plant in northern Quebec.
Quebec Premier Bernard Landry and Hydro-Quebec president Andre Caille told a news conference that the studies should lead to construction of a 450-megawatt plant on the Peribonka river, in the Lac St-Jean area, about 300 km (190 miles) north of Quebec City.
The studies will start this fall and the opening of the power plant is tentatively set for the fall of 2009. Construction would start in 2004 after public hearings are held and if regulatory approvals are obtained.
