“We don’t follow the Canadian Electrical Code! We are the Canadian Navy," remarked the head of Electrical Maintenance at the Esquimalt Shipyard.

"We have a MUCH higher standard than the Canadian Electrical Code!!

If our electrical systems were installed to the CEC, our ships would sink!! 

I laughed and saw his point. He made a great point!

Like most standards, the CEC is a “minimum allowable standard” that provides for a minimum level of safety.

The same is true for CSA Z462 - Canada’s Arc Flash standard.

Every well-trained and experienced electrical worker (especially who has the experience of being shocked or burned) will tell you that the SAFEST way to work, is to LOTO and work de-energized, not to read the label, dress to the correct PPE level, put your hand in the box and follow the rules.

Electrical Safety Videos and online courses are fine if you just want to have the CEC or CSA Z462 recited to you....
