Largest Wind Farm Built In Eastern US

THOMAS, West Virginia -- - Exelon Generation reports it has added close to 150 megawatts (MW) of wind generation to its portfolio.

Exelon Generation is a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation, an electricity and natural gas company.

Less than a year after groundbreaking, Exelon's Mountaineer Wind Energy Center in Thomas, West Virginia, is now producing emission-free energy. The facility uses the world's latest wind turbine technology and is the largest commercial wind energy facility in the eastern United States.

Exelon Power Team, the wholesale energy marketing division of Exelon Corp., signed a 20-year agreement to purchase the output of the 66 MW facility. The Mountaineer Wind Energy Center is owned and operated by FPL Energy. Exelon Power Team will jointly market the output of the facility with Community Energy, Inc., of Wayne, Pennsylvania.

In addition to the 90 MW of wind generation already being produced, Exelon Power Team also has a 20-year agreement for the Moosic Mountain Wind Farm, now known as the Waymart Wind Project in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The Waymart Wind Project is expected to bring close to 70 megawatts of wind energy to the Northeast region as it is expected to be in operation in Spring 2003.

"We see real value in the role Exelon is playing in bringing alternative energy resources to customers in the MidAtlantic region," said Mike Freeman, a long-term power transactor for Exelon Power Team. "Exelon will continue to pursue renewable energy projects in regions where such projects make economic sense."

The Mountaineer Wind Project increases the amount of clean energy that is marketed to commercial and residential customers in the PJM West territory, a recent extension of the country's largest independent system operator, PJM Interconnection.

Exelon Power Team's current renewable supply portfolio includes wind, landfill gas, hydroelectric, solar, and biomass generation.

Britain Prepares for High Winter Heating and Electricity Costs

LONDON - The government organization that controls the cost of energy in Great Britain recently increased what is known as a price cap. The price cap is the highest amount that gas suppliers can charge for a unit of energy.

The new, higher cost has people concerned that they may not be able to pay for their gas and electricity this winter. Some might pay as much as $4,188 for energy next year. Earlier this year, the price cap was at $2,320.
