Five South St. Burger locations using clean power
Driven by a philosophy that it takes more than good ingredients to make a great burger, South St. Burger Co. is signing on for green electricity to complement its existing comprehensive sustainability plan — one that is currently being implemented in stores in Ontario and Alberta. By bullfrogpowering five Ontario restaurants, South St. Burger Co. is reducing its environmental impact, helping to support new renewable generation in Canada, and joining the thousands of individuals and organizations across the country working toward a cleaner energy future.
"As part of our philosophy to 'Be the Right Choice,' we've already taken many steps to reduce the environmental impact of our restaurants," says Jay Gould, President, South St. Burger Co. and New York Fries. "Signing on for green electricity with Bullfrog Power is just one more important step towards our long term goal of making our restaurants as eco-friendly as possible."
South St. Burger Co. has pioneered the notion of premium fast food, using real, fresh ingredients. Its hormone and antibiotic-free beef is purchased from local farms that practice conscientious and natural farming and is turned into fresh, 100 per cent beef patties. South St. Burger Co.'s commitment to operating conscientiously is not exclusive to its ingredient selection. Restaurants have reduced their heating requirements by more than 300 cubic metres of gas per month through grill hoods with high technology heat exchange ventilation systems. The restaurants also use air-cooled as opposed to water-cooled ice machines, and LED bulbs for 50 per cent of their lighting requirements, and South St. Burger Co. has installed a solar- powered water heater and solar electric panel at two locations, with plans to add more.
"South St. Burger is known for its great tasting hamburgers and environmentally friendly business practices," said Tom Heintzman, President, Bullfrog Power. "By taking this one extra step and signing on with Bullfrog Power, South St. Burger Co. is further reducing its environmental impact, and showing that offering an enjoyable fast food experience and being environmentally responsible can go hand in hand."
In Ontario, Bullfrog Power's electricity comes exclusively from local wind and hydro facilities that have been certified as low impact by Environment Canada under its EcoLogoM program — instead of from polluting sources like coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear. Bullfrog's generators inject clean, renewable electricity onto the regional grid to match the electricity requirements of five of South St. Burger Co.'s Ontario restaurants.
