Spain urged to extend nuclear power stations' lifespans
- The Spanish nuclear energy industry is urging the government to extend the lifespan of nuclear power stations to sixty years as opposed to the current forty.
Experts from the Nuclear Forum believe that by means of this measure the additional energy generated in Spain by the sector would prevent the emission of 50m tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, thus respecting the environment and helping fulfill the Kyoto commitments.
The nuclear energy sector is also proposing to encourage a national debate to achieve consensus on the sector's future. The president of the Nuclear Forum, Eduardo Gonzalez, said the issue of nuclear waste and its effects had been brought under control and resolved at a global level. In his opinion, more information must be provided about the advantages of this energy, which is perfectly compatible with others and ever more widely accepted at a worldwide level.
