Pressure to close Gentilly-2 plant applied
The call comes as Japan struggles with its tsunami-crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.
Located in Becancour, near Trois-Rivieres, the Gentilly-2 reactor produces about three per cent of QuebecÂ’s electricity.
On April 13 and 14, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is to hold public hearings about a $2-billion plan to refurbish Gentilly-2, which opened in 1983.
Mouvement Sortons le Quebec du Nucleaire — which includes scientists, artists and groups such as Greenpeace, the David Suzuki Foundation and Nature Quebec — is to hold a news conference about its demand.
The coalition says it opposes the plant because of the potential risk to human health.

Carbon capture: How can we remove CO2 from the atmosphere?
BERLIN - The world is, on average, 1.1 degrees Celsius warmer today than it was in 1850. If this trend continues, our planet will be 2 – 3 degrees hotter by the end of this century, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
The main reason for this temperature rise is higher levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, which cause the atmosphere to trap heat radiating from the Earth into space. Since 1850, the proportion of CO2 in the air has increased from 0.029% to 0.041% (288 ppm to 414 ppm).
