Abengoa Path 42 Transmission Upgrade boosts IID capacity with 32 km reconductoring of a 230 kV line and substation upgrades under turnkey EPC, enabling access to California renewable energy and improving reliability in 12 months.
What's Behind the News
A 12-month IID EPC to reconductor 32 km 230 kV line and upgrade substations, improving access to California renewables.
- 32 km reconductoring of 230 kV Path 42 line
- IID turnkey EPC: engineering, construction, commissioning
- Substation upgrades to increase transfer capacity
The contract includes the engineering, construction and commissioning of 32 kilometers of transmission line, as well as the extension of existing substations.
Abengoa, the company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainable development in the energy and environment sectors, has been chosen by Imperial Irrigation District IID for a power transmission project that includes the upgrade of a 230kV transmission line, as well as substations in the state of California.
The 'Path 42' project is part of a plan to extend the power network, similar to competitive transmission projects pursued in other regions, being developed by Imperial Irrigation District, the sixth largest electrical utility in California, in order to increase the capacity of the network and enable access to new sources of renewable energy in California.
The contract involves the reconductoring of a total of 32 kilometers of a 230 kV transmission line, which can prompt transmission line hearings in some jurisdictions, as well as the upgrade of existing substations, under a turnkey format EPC.
Abengoa will be responsible for the engineering, construction and commissioning, ensuring the highest levels of quality in every process and aligning with California review requirements. The project is expected to take 12 months to complete and will be delivered to Imperial Irrigation District in April 2014. Abengoa will not retain any interest in the constructed assets.
This project will enable part of the region's energy to be supplied in an efficient and sustainable way.
This new contract will extend Abengoa's experience with transmission lines, amid bidding to build transmission lines in other markets, and will further consolidate its commitment to the U.S. market where it is already present in 12 states.
