Bruce Power clean energy delivers affordable nuclear power for Ontario, supports coal phase-out, enhances grid flexibility with up to 2,400 MW curtailment, and leverages the Bruce-Milton transmission line with Hydro One to improve air quality.
Breaking Down the Details
Bruce Power clean energy is Ontario's affordable nuclear supply with flexible output, cleaner air, and reliable power.
- Supplies affordable, zero-emission nuclear power to Ontario
- Supports coal phase-out and improved air quality
- Offers up to 2,400 MW dynamic grid curtailment
Recently, Bruce Power, one of Ontario's nuclear power generators, launched its vision for the future of nuclear power in Ontario between now and 2040.
“Between now and 2040, the world will change and so will our province,” said Duncan Hawthorne, Bruce Power President and CEO. “We can play a positive role to improve the lives of Ontarians, because we keep electricity rates affordable, while protecting the air we breathe. That’s what our vision is all about.”
Over the last 12 years, Bruce Power has been focused on revitalizing its site to return all units to operation, including plans to restart two more units, and establish itself as a long-term, leading supplier of affordable, clean electricity.
“It’s essential we communicate a clear vision of how Bruce Power is contributing, including major manufacturing contracts that support our supply chain, to the Ontario we aspire to build over the long term,” Hawthorne said.
The Bruce Power site is now in a unique position with the successful completion of the fully serviced Bruce-Milton transmission line, which Hydro One brought into service last year. In addition, it is the only nuclear facility in the province that provides Ontario’s electricity market with flexible capability – it can dynamically remove up to 2,400 megawatts from the grid upon request, underscoring the high stakes at Bruce Power for reliability today. With the impending phase out of coal, this flexibility is more important then ever.
“Ontario is a leader in North America, becoming the first jurisdiction to phase out coal-fired generation, and I’m proud of the role Bruce Power has played in this success through ongoing nuclear improvements across the fleet,” Hawthorne said.
With the increased site output since 2002, including an operating record milestone, Bruce Power has provided enough additional energy to meet 70 per cent of this challenge.
