National Grid supports Waxman-Markey discussion draft

Tom King, President of National Grid U.S., applauded the introduction of the groundbreaking Waxman-Markey discussion draft, to move forward legislation on climate change and energy policy.

“Tackling climate change through a coordinated energy policy is absolutely vital, and the time to act is now. The Waxman-Markey announcement… is a positive and welcome step forward to meeting that challenge.

“We must create jobs and reduce our emissions through plugging in more renewable energy, building smarter networks and increasing our energy efficiency programs. Fighting recession and the effects of climate change can easily work hand-in-hand. The country needs investment now and this will drive the right form of investment for the low-carbon economy of the future.

“National Grid is a long time leader in energy efficiency programs. We have committed to emission reduction targets of 45 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050. However, we now need a clear framework in order for the entire country to achieve real carbon reductions.

“We look forward to fully participating as soon as possible on the next steps, to help customers and businesses across the country, and ensure a coordinated energy and climate change policy becomes reality.”

There's a Russia-Sized Mystery in China's Electricity Sector

BEIJING - Here’s a new obstacle that could prevent the world finally turning the corner on climate change: Imagine that over the coming decade a whole new economy the size of Russia were to pop up out of nowhere. With the world’s fourth-largest electricity sector and largest burden of power plant emissions after China, the U.S. and India, this new economy on its own would be enough to throw out efforts to halt global warming — especially if it keeps on growing through the 2030s.

That’s the risk inherent in China’s seemingly insatiable appetite for grid power.
