NJ's largest utility asking for rate hikes
NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - New Jersey's Board of Public Utilities is giving customers a chance to weigh in on a request to raise rates for the state's largest utility company.
Public Service Electric and Gas Co., a subsidiary of Public Service Enterprise Group Inc., has requested raising electric rates by 4 percent and gas rates by 5.4 percent. That would mean an extra $55 a year on the bills of electric customers and $77 for gas.
The Newark-based utility, which has 2.1 million customers across the state, wants the higher rates to be in place by the end of March.
The first hearing before the BPU on the proposed increase is scheduled was held in Hackensack.

First US coal plant in years opens where no options exist
WASHINGTON - One way to boost coal in the US: Find a spot near a mine with no access to oil or natural gas pipelines, where it’s not particularly windy and it’s dark much of the year.

A 17-megawatt generator, built for $245 million, is set to open in April at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, just 100 miles from the state’s only coal mine.
