UK to fix biomass support for 20 years

UNITED KINGDOM - The production of energy using biomass will get steady support under Britain's Renewables Obligation RO system for the next 20 years, the new coalition government said.

"This provides the certainty that investors have been looking for electricity from dedicated solid and gaseous biomass, energy from waste, anaerobic digestion and advanced conversion technologies such as gasification and pyrolysis," the government said in a statement.

"Support will be fixed for 20 years, subject to the 2037 end date of the RO."

The government also said it wanted to speed up the introduction of smart meters and would consult with industry on how quickly the key equipment for more efficient energy use could be installed in most British homes.
