LIPA selects vendor for Smart Grid project on Fire Island

ATLANTA, GA. – - ATLANTA, GA. – Long Island Power Authority LIPA has selected Landis+Gyr to deploy advanced metering and smart grid technology on Fire Island, the central island of the outer barrier islands along the south shore of Long Island, as part of a project to enhance service, safety and reliability of the electric distribution system for residents and businesses.

The utility will install Landis+Gyr’s radio frequency network – which enables communication with advanced meters, distribution devices and home area network technology – along with 4,500 of the vendor's advanced meters.

Once the system is installed, LIPA will be able to pinpoint outage locations, and have more visibility into distribution grid conditions. The system will also help provide more information to consumers on their energy use, and improve customer service by expediting response to seasonal account changes.

Based in Uniondale, NY, LIPA is a non-profit municipal electric provider that owns and operates the retail electric transmission and distribution system on Long Island and provides electric service to more than 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. LIPA is the second largest municipal electric utility in the nation in terms of electric revenues, third largest in terms of customers served and the seventh largest in terms of electricity delivered.
