China Three Gorges Project Corporation officially signed the general contract with Sarawak Energy Berhad for the construction of the Murum Hydropower Station, the first overseas hydropower project of the CTGPC.

According to the contract, the CTGPC will be responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction of the project, which requires an investment of about $1 billion. Construction of the project will be officially started this month, and the total construction period of the project will be five years.

Murum Hydropower Station is the first large-scale hydropower project proposed by the Sarawak Government and is also the first overseas hydropower project of the CTGPC.

The power station will be located on Murum River, the headstream of the Rejang basin in central Sarawak, on Borneo Island. The project is the second project among the four cascade projects proposed in the upstream of the Rejang River and is about 70 kilometers downstream of the Bakun project, which is currently under construction.

The project has a control catchment area of about 2,750 square kilometers at the damsite and will have a total installed capacity of 944 megawatts.

'Net Zero' Emissions Targets Not Possible Without Multiple New Nuclear Power Stations, Say Industry Leaders

LONDON - Leading nuclear industry figures will today call for a major programme of new power stations to hit ambitious emissions reduction targets.

The 19th Nuclear Industry Association annual conference in London will highlight the need for a proven, dependable source of low carbon electricity generation alongside growth in weather-dependent solar and wind power.

Without this, they argue, the country risks embedding a major reliance on carbon-emitting gas fired power stations for generations to come.

Annual public opinion polling released today to coincide with the conference revealed 75% of the population want the UK Government to take more action to reduce CO2 emissions.
