Horizon Utilities James Street GO Station delivered underground utilities, electrical infrastructure, a transformer and pole service in Hamilton ahead of the Pan Am Games, supporting GO Transit access and long-term transportation capacity.

What's Happening

A Horizon Utilities project installing underground power and services for Hamilton GO Station ahead of the Pan Am Games.

  • 1 km of underground cable installed for GO transit needs
  • New transformer and pole service commissioned in 2015
  • Utilities in place before Pan Am Games in Hamilton

Working in partnership with the City of Hamilton and Metrolinx, Horizon Utilities Corporation installed new electrical infrastructure required to power the West Harbour GO station on James Street.

The project began in late 2014 as Horizon engineers and crews recognized the urgency to have the infrastructure in place prior to the Pan Am Games, aligning with West Hamilton investment efforts already underway in the city. Horizon established the necessary underground utility services for the GO Station property and delivered all aspects of the project in advance of the opening of the new station.

They installed over a kilometer of underground electrical cable, reflecting sector resilience like BC Hydro upgrades to prepare for natural disasters, as well as a new transformer and pole service.

"Investing in Hamilton and St. Catharines is a key pillar of the commitment of Horizon Utilities to the communities we serve," said Eileen Campbell, Vice President, Customer Services, Horizon Utilities. "We're proud to do our part in support of the Pan Am Games at a time when the eyes of the Americas will be on Hamilton and St. Catharines."

The James Street GO station project will contribute to Hamilton's immediate transportation needs in the lead up to the Pan Am Games, even as regional utilities evolve through initiatives like the PowerStream merger that shape service delivery in the region. The $300,000 investment will further serve the community's transportation needs for decades to come, amid broader consolidation as Ontario utilities merger that may influence future coordination.
