The Southwest Electric Power Design Institute, a wholly owned subsidiary of China Power Engineering Consulting Corporation, has won three overseas survey and engineering service contracts.

So far this year, the institute has secured five similar overseas contracts for a combined total of 4,230 megawatts (MW).

The three projects are: the 2 X 600 MW boiler, turbine and generator (BTG) engineering service contract for the DVC Project in India; the 1+1 X 300 MW BTG engineering service contract for India's Jindal Group; and the survey and engineering service contract for the 1 x 330 MW Uong Bi Thermal Power Plant in Vietnam.

Founded in the 1960s, SEPDI is a leading electric power design enterprise that focuses on surveying, geotechnical engineering and design, with more than 40 years of experience in China. In the first half of 2008, SEPDI had more than 2,100 MW of capacity commissioned under its design.

The institute is expected to have 5,760 MW of installed capacity, 3,314 kilometers of transmission lines and 10,680 megavolt-amperes of transformer substations to be commissioned under its design this year. While ensuring the survey and engineering of projects in China, SEPDI has been enhancing preparations for overseas projects.

The institute is expected to have engineering contracts for more than 10 oversea projects to be signed this year with a total installed capacity more than 11,000 MW.

Physicists Just Achieved Conduction of Electricity at Close to The Speed of Light

LONDON - When it comes to data transfer and computing, the faster we can shift electrons and conduct electricity the better – and scientists have just been able to transport electrons at sub-femtosecond speeds (less than one quadrillionth of a second) in an experimental setup.

The trick is manipulating the electrons with light waves that are specially crafted and produced by an ultrafast laser. It might be a long while before this sort of setup makes it into your laptop, but the fact they pulled it off promises a significant step forward in terms of what we can expect from our…
