Site preparation begins for Finnish cogeneration plant
VAASA, FINLAND - Westenergy Oy recently began site preparation for a 13-megawatt (MW) cogeneration plant to be situated 10 kilometres from the Finnish municipality of Vaasa in western Finland.
Von Roll Inova, the Swiss subsidiary of Austrian Energy & Environment, was awarded a 60 million euro (US $90 million) contract for the engineering, design and supply of the main boiler, process technology, combustion and steam generation systems, including support and ancillary systems for the power facility.
The contract for the supply of the turbine and generator has not been finalized yet, and a contract is expected to be awarded in the coming months, project managers told Industrial Info.
The highly efficient plant concept is based on Von Roll Inova's proven combustion technology. The onsite 13-MW turbine will generate enough electricity to serve more than 30,000 households. The plant will process 150,000 tonnes of domestic and commercial waste per year from about 60 municipalities in western Finland in an environmentally friendly manner. The plant will also generate 40 MW of district heat.
Site preparation began at the beginning of November, and the plant's structural erection is expected to start in the first months of 2010. The plant is projected to begin supplying district heating in 2013.
