Manitoba Hydro To Build 230-Kv Line To North Dakota
- Manitoba Hydro Electric has applied to Canadian regulators to build a 230-kilovolt international power line to North Dakota to alleviate an overburdened U.S. grid, the public utility said Wednesday.
MB Hydro plans to build the 163-kilometer line with Otter Tail Power Company and Xcel Energy Inc., both Minnesota-based utilities, said spokesman Jim Peters.
The line would access already contracted electricity to bring additional power to a congested grid stateside, he said. 'The existing capability in North Dakota to import power has been degraded because of increasing loads,' Peters said from Winnipeg. 'There are more power demands from existing interconnects taxing the system.'
The Canadian utility reached the agreement with Xcel and Otter Power after 3 years of negotiations.
Estimated cost of the 80-km Canadian portion is C$22 million. The 85-km U.S. portion will cost an estimated US$30 million.
The proposed line will run from Manitoba Hydro's Glenboro station in southwestern Manitoba and terminate at a proposed new substation in North Dakota,

Egypt's renewable energy to reach 6.6 GW by year-end
CAIRO - Egypt is planning to expand into renewable energy projects in a bid to increase its contribution to the energy mix, the country’s minister of electricity and renewable energy Mohamed Shaker said.
Renewable power is expected to add 6.6 gigawatts (GW) by the end of 2020, with plans to reach 8,200 megawatts (MW) after the completion of the renewable energy projects currently under consideration, Shaker added in a statement on Tuesday.
This came during the minister’s video-conference meeting with the British ambassador to Egypt Geoffrey Adams to explore the potential means for cooperation between the two countries in the electricity sector.
