ATLANTA, GA. – Long Island Power Authority LIPA has selected Landis+Gyr to deploy advanced metering and smart grid technology on Fire Island, the central island of the outer barrier islands along the south shore of Long Island, as part of a project to enhance service, safety and reliability of the electric distribution system for residents and businesses.

The utility will install Landis+Gyr’s radio frequency network – which enables communication with advanced meters, distribution devices and home area network technology – along with 4,500 of the vendor's advanced meters.

Once the system is installed, LIPA will be able to pinpoint outage locations, and have more visibility into distribution grid conditions. The system will also help provide more information to consumers on their energy use, and improve customer service by expediting response to seasonal account changes.

“This project is another example of the tangible benefits an advanced metering solution can deliver,” said Gary High, Vice President of Sales at Landis+Gyr. “[Our technology] is proven to promote efficiency and reliability of distribution systems, while improving customer service and providing the information to help manage energy better.”

Based in Uniondale, NY, LIPA is a non-profit municipal electric provider that owns and operates the retail electric transmission and distribution system on Long Island and provides electric service to more than 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. LIPA is the second largest municipal electric utility in the nation in terms of electric revenues, third largest in terms of customers served and the seventh largest in terms of electricity delivered.

U.S. Speeds Up Permitting for Geothermal Energy

In a significant policy shift, the U.S. Department of the Interior has introduced emergency permitting procedures aimed at expediting the development of geothermal energy projects. Background and Rationale

The decision to fast-track geothermal energy projects comes in the wake of President Donald Trump's declaration of a national energy emergency on January 20, 2025. This declaration cited high energy costs and an unreliable energy grid as threats to national security and…
