ABB Network Manager at National Grid unifies SCADA, advanced applications, and smart grid controls for transmission and distribution, boosting reliability, cybersecurity, situational awareness, and operator training across upstate New York and New England control centers.

Key Information

ABB's Network Manager unifies SCADA and smart grid at National Grid to manage T&D with robust security and reliability.

  • SCADA with advanced power applications and analytics
  • Common platform for T&D control centers in NY and New England
  • Integrated operator training simulator for real-world scenarios
  • CIM-based integration, full redundancy, and expansion scope
  • Meets NERC CIP and National Grid cybersecurity requirements

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, will implement its Network Manager SCADA/EMS (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Energy Management System) solution in the U.S. for National Grid, a leading energy utility.

National Grid will deploy the technology in its up-state New York and New England electric operations control centers to manage the transmission and distribution networks in the region, complementing its New York pilot program to advance grid capabilities.

“We are delighted to work with National Grid,” said Jens Birgersson, head of Network Management at ABB, a part of the Power Systems division. “Network Manager is a market leader that enables reliable, secure and energy-efficient network operation, and is an ideal base for smart grid applications across utilities.”

As part of the project scope, ABB will provide design, engineering, software, hardware, system implementation and related services informed by its hydro plants monitoring solution experience on similar projects. The Network Manager platform includes the SCADA system, advanced power system applications, user interface with advanced visualization and situational awareness, as well as a fully integrated operator training simulator. It also has system integration capabilities, including the use of CIM (Common Information Model), full system redundancy and offers scope for expansion. Network Manager meets industry mandated NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection Standards and National Grid cyber security requirements.

“This project is part of National Grid’s continuing investment in enhancing service and reliability, including the recent Quincy power line project that strengthens capacity for our customers” said Masheed H. Saidi, National Grid’s executive vice president and chief operating officer for U.S. Transmission. “We look forward to benefiting from ABB’s resources and expertise.”

National Grid is an international energy delivery company, owning over 4,000 megawatts of contracted electricity generation capacity in the U.S. and delivering electricity to around 3.3 million customers in Massachusetts, supported by its grid modernization plan in the state, New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island. It also manages the electricity network on Long Island under an agreement with the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA).
