General Electric Co. said that Suncor Energy Inc. has ordered 55 wind turbines for a major wind power project northeast of Calgary.

GE did not disclose the value of the contract for the 1.6 megawatt turbines. The Wintering Hills project is part of a new "crop" of wind farms being built across Canada. At peak operation, the Wintering Hills wind farm is expected to generate enough clean electricity to power approximately 35,000 Canadian homes.

GE will deliver the turbines to the site beginning in the second quarter of 2011. The project is owned jointly by Suncor and Teck Resources Ltd.
