Renewable Energy Services Ltd. is based in Windsor, Nova Scotia.
"Wind power in Nova Scotia became a reality in 2002 and in 2003 Nova Scotia Power will continue to help facilitate renewable energy development in the province," says James Taylor, General Manager, Power Production with Nova Scotia Power. "We are excited to take the next step with RESL."
The letter of intent signed by NSPI and RESL will be followed by a power purchase agreement. Discussions will focus on timing, construction, grid interconnection and other considerations related to a major wind power development.
"We are thrilled to see that the opportunities for renewable energy development, and local economic development that were the cornerstone of our corporate evolution are coming to fruition," says Erik Twohig, President of Renewable Energy Services Limited. "The strong and broad-based support of Nova Scotians, reflected by their participation with hearts and wallets, has provided us with the tenacity to work toward this exciting announcement."
RESL was selected following a Request for Proposals from Nova Scotia Power earlier in 2002. NSPI launched the Green Power program this Fall with a pair of wind turbines delivering 1.2 megawatts of electricity.
The province's energy strategy, released in December 2001, encourages a significant wind power commitment in Nova Scotia.
Nova Scotia Power Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Emera, a diversified, regional energy company. Nova Scotia Power provides more than 95 per cent of electric generation, transmission and distribution to more than 440,000 customers across Nova Scotia. NSPI is committed to supporting Nova Scotian communities by providing safe, reliable power.
