Engineers and professional staff at Hydro One have voted 97 per cent to give their leadership the mandate to call a strike if talks with the company don't produce a satisfactory agreement.

The Society of Energy Professionals said 92 per cent of its members turned out for the province-wide vote.

The society and the company are currently meeting with a provincial conciliator. Talks resume March 29.

A strike or lockout deadline can't be set until conciliation breaks down.

The contract expires on March 31.

The society says its members are unhappy with a proposal to lengthen the workweek to 40 hours from 35 hours with no pay increase.
