American Electric Power's West Virginia electric utilities are offering customers the chance to buy "green" power.

Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power say residential customers can buy 100-kilowatt-hour blocks of electricity generated by wind, hydroelectric dams, solar energy and biomass for $1.50 per block. A typical residential customer uses about 1,000 kilowatts monthly, or the equivalent of 10 blocks.

The companies say the cost is in addition to regular monthly charges. To sign up, go to http://www.appalachianpower.com or call Appalachian Power at 1-800-982-4237 or Wheeling Power at 1-800-852-6942.
