German utility E.ON announced it laid half the foundation and the first series of cables to carry electricity from its latest wind farm off the German coast.

Its climate and renewables division said it reached a further milestone with the expansion of offshore wind power with progress on the Rodsand II wind farm in the Baltic Sea.

The company said Rodsand II complex would be its largest, providing enough clean and renewable energy for as many as 230,000 homes.

Frank Mastiaux, the chief executive at the renewables division, said the wind farm development for E.ON was instrumental in alternative energy.

"Work is going to schedule and we are making rapid progress with the expansion of our offshore wind farms," he added.

The company in September announced it produced power for the first time at its Robin Rigg wind farm off the Scotland coast. Wind turbines at Robin Rigg will provide enough energy for around 120,000 homes.

E.ON said it is on schedule to connect Rodsand II to the electrical grid in autumn 2010.
