Mark England decided last year to switch solely to firewood instead of using propane gas to heat his Claiborne County home. He apparently was part of a trend.

It cost about $350 for the wood England used to warm his three-bedroom, two-bath house in Tazewell. And with energy prices even higher this year, it is something he certainly will continue. Others are looking into the old-world energy source as well.

"We had a gas fireplace, but when prices started to skyrocket - I wouldn't say we were forced to - but with the economy at the time, firewood was more reasonable," England said. "I would say it saved me $600. And with gas prices skyrocketing now, I'll be saving quite a bit more."

England was certainly ahead of the game. Soaring energy costs and threatened scarcity of some fuels like home heating oil this year have led more homeowners to seek alternative sources for heat, and as a result, both seasoned firewood and some supplies of wood-burning stoves are expected to be in short supply.

The demand for wood-and-pellet burning stoves has caused local sales to increase this year, and already firewood sales have taken off about a month early.

"We usually start our winter season around October, and this year it's already started," said Ben Hatcher, owner of Ben's Firewood in Knoxville. "People are so worried that things are going to get worse, so they're lining up before it gets too bad."

The push for alternative home heat has largely been driven by the Northeast, where the price of heating oil, still the primary method for home heating, has soared. The average household is projected to spend more than $2,500 this winter, according to the Energy Information Administration, a 30 percent increase from last year. And even with crude oil prices - which factor largely into the price of heating oil - falling to a six-month low recently, the price of heating oil was still just under $3 a gallon, its lowest price since early March. Prices once were projected to hit as high as $4 a gallon.

The oil market still is volatile. The price for a barrel of oil spiked $6 recently, which will push sales of wood-burning stoves and other types of heating sources locally, according to Knox Stove Works President Joe Anderson.

The Knoxville wood- and coal-burning cook stove company already is backlogged on its most popular item, the Torridaire coal heater, a stove that requires no electricity. Stove sales are typically higher after natural disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina, and when economic times are a little rough.

"Our sales to the Northeast this year are as high as they've ever been," Anderson said. "Sales in our typically strong areas, the Mid-Atlantic states and the Appalachian area, are down due to the economy. When the economy is doing well, people tend not to buy wood stoves out of need, but when gas prices go up and where there's a recession, then people start to revisit areas where they can save money."

Sales also are up for many firewood dealers - business is up 40 percent at Bemis Firewood, the New Tazewell company that sells and delivers firewood in a nine-county area in East Tennessee - and the true firewood season hasn't even begun.

"Last year, I think was the beginning," said owner Nathan Bemis. "The people that first jumped on the bandwagon said, 'Hey, prices are getting high; I think it's time to buy firewood.' This year, you're seeing people that were a little more reluctant to go back to it or who had never done it before," he said.

While most new customers are purchasing firewood as a supplemental way to heat their homes, Bemis said the cost to heat an average home throughout the winter using solely firewood - like England, one of his 1,500 customers - would range from $350 and $450. He has been using wood heat for about eight years, and said the savings for his family have been tremendous.

"Before, we were spending $300 a month on electricity. And that's before the fuel prices went up," he said. "Now we're spending like $30."

Bemis buys tree-length timber from loggers, sawmills and other suppliers like tree-trimming companies and then processes it into either kiln wood, seasoned wood or green wood.

But the seasoned wood, or wood that has been dried naturally for about eight or nine months, is quickly becoming in short supply, since it has to be cut around March in order to be ready for winter months.

Kiln wood, or wood that is accelerated through the drying process by sitting four or five days in a 190-degree oven, also is limited based on how much that kiln can produce.

But wood always will be available, Bemis said, even if it's green wood that has been cut more recently.

"A full cord of seasoned wood will replace about 300 gallons of diesel fuel for heating a home," Bemis said. "Green wood would only replace about 225 gallons. The difference is water content - the more water that's in the wood, the more water you have to burn off before you get any heat. But even burning green wood is still cheaper than any other energy source."

Hatcher said he doesn't doubt that some wood shortages will occur. The increase in demand and the fact that fuel costs have spiked this year will likely force Ben's Firewood to charge about $20 more per cord, which is the official measurement for the most popular quantity of firewood, costs that Bemis is trying hard to absorb. The cost of wood did increase there last year.

"With the way the economy is, the way our books are and the way our profits have dropped, we could justify going up. But this is a fuel source that people are going to rely on. Quite frankly, they can't afford it," Bemis said.

There certainly is a lot to consider when deciding to switch to alternative heating, such as buying a wood- or coal-burning stove, but many of them do burn more efficiently and cleanly than they did in the 1980s. While there will be more cost up front for a stove, Anderson said most mid- to lower-level priced stoves should pay for themselves in about two or two and a half years.

As for firewood, Bemis recommended buyers check references of dealers and be sure to have their chimneys swept at least once a year.

"If you've got any amount of land or access to land, and a chain saw, you have basically an inexpensive fuel. A lot less expensive than fuel or gas or electricity," Anderson said.

"We're very fortunate here to live in the South, because in my dealings and travels to the Northeast, it's just a much more terrified area as far as people's attitudes toward the winter. Many people do not know how they're going to pay for all the fuel they're going to use."

Time running out for Ontario to formally request Pickering nuclear power station extension

Ontario’s electricity generator has yet to file an official application to extend the life of the Pickering nuclear power plant, more than eight months after the Ford government announced a plan to continue operating Pickering for longer.

As the province faces an electricity shortfall in 2025 and beyond, the Ford government scrambled to prolong the Pickering power plant until September 2026, in order to guarantee a steady supply of power as the province experiences a rise in demand and shutdowns at other nuclear power plants.

The life extension may come down to the wire, however, as the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), the federal regulator tasked with approving or denying the extension, tells Global News the province has yet to file key paperwork.

The information is required for the application, including materials related to the proposed Pickering B refurbishment, and the government now has a month before the deadline runs out.

“The Commission requires that Ontario Power Generation submit specific information by June 30, 2023, if it intends to operate the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station beyond December 31, 2024,” the CNSC told Global News in a statement. “The Commission Registry has not yet received an application from Ontario Power Generation.”

If Ontario doesn’t receive the green light, the power plant which currently is responsible for 14 per cent of the province’s energy grid will be decommissioned in 2025, leaving the province with a significant electricity supply gap if replacement sources are not secured.

For its part, the Ford government doesn’t seem concerned about the impending timeline, even though the station was slated to close as planned, suggesting the Crown corporation responsible for the application will get it in on time.

“OPG is on track to submit their application before the end of June and has already started to submit supporting materials as part of the regulatory process toward clean power goals,” a spokesperson for energy minister Todd Smith said.

The Clorox Company and a wholly owned subsidiary of Enel Green Power North America announced today the signing of a 12-year, 70 megawatt (MW) virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) for the purchase of renewable energy, aligned with carbon-free electricity investments across the power sector beginning in 2021. Representing about half of Clorox's 100% renewable electricity goal in its operations in the U.S. and Canada, this agreement is expected to help Clorox accelerate achieving its goal in 2021, four years ahead of the company's original plan.

"Climate change and rising greenhouse gas emissions pose a real threat to the health of our planet and ultimately the long-term well-being of people globally. That's why we've taken action for more than 10 years to measure and reduce the carbon footprint of our operations," said Benno Dorer, chair and CEO, The Clorox Company. "Our agreement with Enel helps to expand U.S. renewable energy infrastructure, reflecting our view that companies like Clorox play an important role in addressing global climate change, as landmark policies like the U.S. climate deal further accelerate the transition. We believe this agreement will significantly contribute toward Clorox achieving our goal of 100% renewable electricity in our operations in the U.S. and Canada in 2021, four years earlier than originally planned. The 70MW VPPA between Clorox and Enel Green Power North America for the purchase of renewable energy delivered to the electricity grid is for the second phase of Enel's Roadrunner solar project to be built in Texas, and complement global clean energy collaborations such as Canada-Germany hydrogen cooperation announced recently. Roadrunner is a 497-direct current megawatt (MWdc) solar project that is being built in two phases. The first phase, currently under construction, comprises around 252 MWdc and is expected to be completed by the end of 2019, while the remaining 245 MWdc of capacity is expected to be completed by the end of 2020. Once fully operational, the solar plant could generate up to 1.2 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity annually, while avoiding an estimated 800,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Based on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator[i], this VPPA is estimated to avoid approximately 140,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions each year. This is equivalent to the annual impact that 165,000 acres of U.S. forest can have in removing CO2 from the atmosphere, and illustrates why cleaning up Canada's electricity is central to emissions reductions in the power sector, or the carbon impact of the electricity needed to power more than 24,000 U.S. homes annually.

"We are proud to support Clorox on their path towards 100% renewable electricity in its operations in the U.S. and Canada by helping them achieve about half their goal through this agreement," said Georgios Papadimitriou, head of Enel Green Power North America. "This agreement with Clorox reinforces the continued significance of renewable energy as a fundamental part of any company's sustainability strategy."

Schneider Electric Energy & Sustainability Services advised Clorox on this power purchase agreement and, amid heightened investor attention exemplified by the Duke Energy climate report, supported the company in its project selection, analysis, negotiations and deal execution.

 

Clorox Commits to Scope 1, 2 and 3 Science-Based Targets

For more than 10 years, Clorox has consistently achieved its goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its operations. Clorox is focused on setting emissions reduction targets in line with climate science. As a participant in the Science Based Targets Initiative, Clorox has committed to setting and achieving science-based greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets in its operations (Scopes 1 and 2) and across its value chain (Scope 3), and consistent with national pathways such as Canada's net-zero 2050 target pursued by policymakers. The targets are considered "science-based" if they are in line with what the latest climate science says is necessary to meet the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement – a global environmental accord to address climate change and its negative impacts.

IEA: Electricity investment surpasses oil and gas for the first time

Electricity Investment Surpasses Oil and Gas 2016, driven by renewable energy, power grids, and energy efficiency, as IEA reports lower oil and gas spending, rising solar and wind capacity, and declining coal power plant approvals.

Investments in electricity surpassed those in oil and gas for the first time ever in 2016 on a spending splurge on renewable energy and power grids as the fall in crude prices led to deep cuts, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said.

Total energy investment fell for the second straight year by 12 per cent to US$1.7 trillion compared with 2015, the IEA said. Oil and gas investments plunged 26 per cent to US$650 billion, down by over a quarter in 2016, and electricity generation slipped 5 per cent.

"This decline (in energy investment) is attributed to two reasons," IEA chief economist Laszlo Varro told journalists.

"The reaction of the oil and gas industry to the prolonged period of low oil prices which was a period of harsh investment cuts; and technological progress which is reducing investment costs in both renewable power and in oil and gas," he said.

Oil and gas investment is expected to rebound modestly by 3 per cent in 2017, driven by a 53 per cent upswing in U.S. shale, and spending in Russia and the Middle East, the IEA said in a report.

"The rapid ramp up of U.S. shale activities has triggered an increase of U.S. shale costs of 16 per cent in 2017 after having almost halved from 2014-16," the report said.

The global electricity sector, however, was the largest recipient of energy investment in 2016 for the first time ever, overtaking oil, gas and coal combined, the report said.

"Robust investments in renewable energy and increased spending in electricity networks, which supports the outlook that low-emissions sources will cover most demand growth, made electricity the biggest area of capital investments," Varro said.

Electricity investment worldwide was US$718 billion, lifted by higher spending in power grids which offset the fall in power generation investments.

"Investment in new renewables-based power capacity, at US$297 billion, remained the largest area of electricity spending, despite falling back by 3 per cent as clean energy investment in developing nations slipped, the report said."

Although renewables investments was 3 per cent lower than five years ago, capacity additions were 50 per cent higher and expected output from this capacity about 35 per cent higher, thanks to the fall in unit costs and technology improvements in solar PV and wind generation, the IEA said.

 

COAL INVESTMENT IS COMING TO AN END

Investments in coal-fired electricity plants fell sharply. Sanctioning of new coal power plants fell to the lowest level in nearly 15 years, reflecting concerns about local air pollution, and emergence of overcapacity and competition from renewables, with renewables poised to eclipse coal in global power generation, notably in China. Coal investments, however, grew in India.

"Coal investment is coming to an end. At the very least, it is coming to a pause," Varro said.

The IEA report said energy efficiency investments continued to expand in 2016, reaching US$231 billion, with most of it going to the building sector globally.

Electric vehicles sales rose 38 per cent in 2016 to 750,000 vehicles at $6 billion, and represented 10 per cent of all transport efficiency spending. Some US$6 billion was spent globally on electronic vehicle charging stations, the IEA said.

Spending on electricity networks and storage continued the steady rise of the past five years, as surging electricity demand puts power systems under strain, reaching an all-time high of US$277 billion in 2016, with 30 per cent of the expansion driven by China’s spending in its distribution system, the report said.

China led the world in energy investments with 21 per cent of global total share, the report said, driven by low-carbon electricity supply and networks projects.

Although oil and gas investments fell in the United States in 2016, its total energy investments rose 16 per cent, even as Americans use less electricity in recent years, on the back of spending in renewables projects, the IEA report said.

Wind Denmark - summer's autumn weather provides extraordinarily low electricity prices

A downturn in the cable connection to Norway and Sweden, together with low electricity consumption and high electricity production, has pushed down European electricity prices to a negative level in Western Denmark.

A sign that the electrification of society is urgently needed, says Soren Klinge, head of electricity market at Wind Denmark today.

The heavy winds during the first weekend of July, unlike periods when cheap wind power wanes in the UK, have not only had consequences for the Danes who had otherwise been looking forward to spending their first days at home in the garden or at the beach. It has also pushed down prices in the electricity market to a negative level, which especially the West Danish wind turbine owners have had to notice.

'The electricity market is currently affected by an unfortunate coincidence of various factors that have a negative impact on the electricity price: a reduced export capacity to the other Nordic countries, a low electricity consumption and a high electricity generation, reflecting broader concerns over dispatchable power shortages in Europe today. Unfortunately, the coincidence of these three factors means that the price base falls completely out of the market. This is another sign that the electrification of society is urgently needed, 'explains Soren Klinge, electricity market manager at Wind Denmark.

According to the European power exchange Nord Pool Spot, where UK peak power prices are also tracked, the cable connection to Sweden is expected to return to full capacity from 19 July. The connection between Jutland and Norway is only expected to return to full capacity in early September.

2000 MWh / hour in special regulation

During the windy weather on Monday morning, July 6, up to 2000 MWh / hour was activated at national level in the form of so-called special regulation. Special regulation is the designation that the German system operator TenneT switches off Danish electricity generation at cogeneration plants and wind turbines in order to help with the balancing of the German power system during such events. In addition, electric boilers at the cogeneration plants also contribute by using the electricity from the electricity grid and converting it to district heating for the benefit of Danish homes and businesses.

'The Danish wind turbines are probably the source of most of the special regulation, because there are very few cogeneration units to down-regulate electricity generation. Of course, it is positive to see that we have a high degree of flexibility in the wind-based power system at home. That being said, Denmark does not really get ahead with the green transition, even as its largest energy company plans to stop using coal by 2023, until we are able to raise electricity consumption based on renewable energy.

Some retail power companies in Texas are making an unusual plea to their customers amid a winter storm that has sent electricity prices skyrocketing: Please, leave us.

Power supplier, Griddy, told all 29,000 of its customers that they should switch to another provider as spot electricity prices soared to as high as $9,000 a megawatt-hour. Griddy’s customers are fully exposed to the real-time swings in wholesale power markets, so those who don’t leave soon will face extraordinarily high electricity bills.

“We made the unprecedented decision to tell our customers — whom we worked really hard to get — that they are better off in the near term with another provider,” said Michael Fallquist, chief executive officer of Griddy. “We want what’s right by our consumers, so we are encouraging them to leave. We believe that transparency and that honesty will bring them back” once prices return to normal.

Texas is home to the most competitive electricity market in America. Homeowners and businesses shopping for electricity churn power providers there like credit cards. In the face of such cutthroat competition, retail power providers in the region have grown accustomed to offering new customers incredibly low rates, incentives and, at least in Griddy’s case, unusual plans that allow customers to pay wholesale power prices as opposed to fixed ones.

The ruthless nature of the business has power traders speculating over which firms might have been caught short this week in the most dramatic run-up in spot power prices they’ve ever seen, and even talk of a market bailout has surfaced.

Not all companies are asking customers to leave. Others are just pleading for them to cut back to reduce blackout risks during extreme weather.

Pulse Power, based in The Woodlands, Texas, is offering customers a chance to win a Tesla Model 3, or free electricity for up to a year if they reduce their power usage by 10% in the coming days. Austin-based Bulb is offering $2 per kilowatts-hour, up to $200, for any energy customers save.

Griddy, however, is in a different position. Its service is simple — and controversial. Members pay a $9.99 monthly fee and then pay the cost of spot power traded on Texas’s power grid based on the time of day they use it. Earlier this month, that meant customers were saving money — and at times even getting paid — to use electricity at night. But in recent days, the cost of their power has soared from about 5 to 6 cents a kilowatt-hour to $1 or more. That’s when Fallquist knew it was time to urge his customers to leave.

“I can tell you it was probably one of the hardest decisions we’ve ever made,” he said. “Nobody ever wants to see customers go.”

Griddy isn’t the only one out there actively encouraging its customers to leave. People were posting similar pleas on Twitter over the holiday weekend from other Texas utilities and retail power providers offering everything from $100 rebates to waived cancellation fees as incentives to switch.

Customers may not even be able to switch. Rizwan Nabi, president of energy consultancy Riz Energy in Houston, said several power providers in Texas have told him they aren’t accepting new customers due to this week’s volatile prices, while grid improvements are debated statewide.

Hector Torres, an energy trader in Texas, who is a Griddy customer himself, said he tried to switch services over the long weekend but couldn’t find a company willing to take him until Wednesday, when the weather is forecast to turn warmer.
