Anemometer approved for Lake Ontario

TORONTO, ONTARIO - Toronto Hydro Corporation announced that Toronto Hydro Energy Services Inc. (TH Energy) has officially received final approval from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to build a wind research platform (anemometer) in Lake Ontario, approximately 1.2 km offshore.

Weather permitting, construction of the platform will begin the week of October 26 and is expected to take one month to complete.

The anemometer will provide factual information about the wind resource in this area — measuring wind speed and direction at heights between 5 metres to 150 metres using a LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) device.

The research study will be conducted for approximately two years and the collected wind data along with other important factors will help determine whether an offshore wind project is economically viable.
