Hang glider hits power lines and dies

The man was flying his hang-glider above the Hwy.7 and Brock Rd. area before somehow losing control and diving into power wires.

"We've shut down for the day," says voice-mail at High Perspective Hang Gliding & Paragliding School Inc. "Sadly, one of our advanced students from Niagara Falls has had an accident."

"A fatal hang-gliding accident temporarily disabled power in some areas of northern Pickering," said George Armstrong, spokesperson for Veridian Corporation, an electricity company which provides power to Durham Region.

"We were advised of the incident by a passerby and immediately dispatched repair crews."

The hang-glider became entangled in our overhead high voltage electricity wires, he explained.

Power workers were instructed to wait until the manÂ’s body was recovered before they began working on fixing the wires, said Armstrong.

By 2:30 p.m, power was restored to about 500 affected customers.
