Mecklenburg-West Pomerania wind farms will deploy 2.5 MW Nordex turbines across four sites, boosting renewable energy in Germany with 45 MW capacity, $130 million investment, 2011 construction, and tenders, pending regional development plan approval.

Understanding the Story

Four Reninvest projects totaling 45 MW with 2.5 MW Nordex turbines, boosting German renewables, pending plan approval.

  • Four sites: 10, 20, 7.5, 7.5 MW; total capacity 45 MW
  • 2.5 MW Nordex turbines specified for all windfarms
  • Construction starts June 2011; completion by year-end

Swiss energy company Reninvest SA recently announced plans to install four new windfarms with a total energy output of 45 megawatts MW in northern Germany.

Mecklenburg I 10 MW, Mecklenburg II 20 MW, Mecklenburg III 7.5 MW and Mecklenburg IV 7.5 MW will be equipped with 2.5MW Nordex Wind Turbines, while REpower's most powerful turbine showcases peak capacities elsewhere in the market.

The four windfarms will be located in the county of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. The exact location will depend on the regional development plan, which has not been approved by the authorities yet. The construction of the windfarms will start in June 2011, and completion is set for the end of the same year, a timetable similar to Germany's massive windfarm progress to date. Tenders for subcontractors will be opened January 2011. Reninvest will invest almost $130 million in the development of the four projects.

Wind conditions in the county of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania are excellent for power generation, a trend reinforced by Siemens' second Baltic Sea contract supporting offshore development. More than 34 of the county's yearly energy needs could be met by wind energy. Almost 1,500 MW of power is currently being produced by wind turbines in the county, according to the German Wind Energy Institute, and projects such as Siemens to supply 80 turbines illustrate the national build-out.

Reninvest was founded in 2004. The company is committed to producing electricity from renewable sources. Reninvest collects investments, plans the site, obtains authorizations, organizes and administrates construction and operates plants. The company owns and operates various windfarms in Germany and has plans to construct wind facilities in Switzerland, Italy and Greece, while peers like RWE's 4,000 MW UK plan highlight broader European expansion.
