The Danube InGrid program is accelerating a new generation of electricity networks in Hungary and Slovakia, focusing on smarter, more flexible and resilient transmission and distribution. Designed for a more electrified future with decentralised generation and active consumers, the initiative targets reliability while accommodating demand growth and new consumption patterns. Backed by €135 million of EU support across two phases, the project goes beyond asset replacement. It deploys automation, advanced monitoring and communications to enhance operational awareness and speed of response during both routine and stress conditions.

In Hungary, 12 newly commissioned substations and associated transmission lines are already in service, supporting industrial development and economic growth. The recently inaugurated Répcelak substation strengthens supply for energy-intensive facilities and materially increases regional hosting capacity for future demand. Climate resilience is a central thread. After severe storms in 2025 damaged overhead lines in eastern Slovakia, investments under the program are replacing exposed spans with underground cables and optical communications. That shift reduces weather vulnerability, improves safety for crews in difficult terrain and enables faster fault detection and predictive analytics. As heat, wind and precipitation extremes intensify, the global context captured in world heat electricity shows why these measures are becoming standard practice across grids.

Real-time situational awareness is being strengthened through meteorological monitoring systems that track temperature, wind speed and rainfall to help operators anticipate disruptions. On the power-flow side, automatic on-load tap changer transformers regulate voltage as renewable output and loads fluctuate, while remote-controlled devices and digital communications increase automation and flexibility. At the VSD dispatching centre in Košice, operators monitor more than 680,000 supply points in real time, with a growing share of operations overseen from the control room instead of the field.
