Why Electrical Safety Program Development Matters
NFPA 70E and CSA Z462 require every employer to have a documented electrical safety program, and regulators ask to see it first after an incident. Many programs are generic binders that don’t match how work is actually done on site, and the gaps only come to light during an audit, an OSHA citation or an arc flash injury.
The 2027 NFPA 70E raises the bar. It adds a work practices audit, separates LOTO program audits from LOTO procedure audits, covers hazards at 50 V and below, and adds emergency response planning for unintentional de?energization. [VERIFY against the published 2027 text.]
This course takes a management?system approach. You will learn what the standards require, how to put it in writing, how to make it work in the field, and how to prove it works through audits, metrics and continuous improvement.
Course Highlights
The course covers:
- The mandatory elements of an ESP under NFPA 70E, CSA Z462 and OSHA, mapped side by side
- Risk assessment, job planning, energized work permits and the electrically safe work condition
- Training and qualification records, the PPE program, contractor management and the link between maintenance and NFPA 70B
- Auditing, leading and lagging indicators, and a hands?on gap assessment workshop
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify the required elements of an electrical safety program under NFPA 70E Article 110, CSA Z462 and OSHA 1910 Subpart S
- Write a program policy that sets out roles, responsibilities and the hierarchy of risk controls
- Build shock and arc flash risk assessment, job briefing and energized electrical work permit procedures
- Establish a LOTO and electrically safe work condition program that meets current audit intervals
- Define qualified and unqualified person criteria, training frequencies and documentation
- Develop a PPE selection, inspection and maintenance program
- Set contractor prequalification, host and contractor responsibilities, and site orientation requirements
- Plan program, work practice and LOTO audits, and track leading and lagging safety metrics
- Complete a gap assessment of your own site and leave with a 90?day implementation plan
The focus is a program that works in the field, not one that just sits on a shelf.
Course Approach
The course is vendor?neutral and based on the standards. Every topic is tied to a document you will need: a policy, a procedure, a form or a checklist.
Participants work through real incident case studies and live polls, then apply what they have learned to their own facility in a structured workshop.
You leave with an editable template package so you aren’t starting from scratch.
