Areva‘s Transmission and Distribution division has been awarded, in partnership with China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI), a contract to supply High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems for projects interconnecting the Ningdong and Shangdong regions (northeast of China) and the Three Gorges Dam to Shanghai.

The contract, worth 100 millions euros, was signed with the State Grid of China. The systems will be delivered in December 2010.

HVDC technology connects power networks and transmits large amounts of electricity over long distances with minimal losses. With plans to transmit more than 130 GW of electricity over the next five to ten years, ChinaÂ’s needs in HVDC are booming.

This success will strengthen ArevaÂ’s position on the domestic HVDC market and demonstrates the companyÂ’s ability to meet ChinaÂ’s needs.
