Harrow wind farm to be running by June

International Power Canada expects to start commercial operation in June at its $110-million (US $106.8-million) Harrow wind farm in southern Ontario, the developer said.

Four 9.9-megawatt projects on the northern shore of Lake Erie will have a total installed capacity of 39.6 MW, generating enough power to serve nearly 12,000 homes annually.

International Power acquired the project with its $119 million cash acquisition of wind-farm developer AIM PowerGen Corp in October 2009. AIM had previously developed the 66-turbine Erie Shores wind farm, which delivers about 99 MW of power to the Ontario grid.

To date, 18 of 24 wind turbine foundations at Harrow are complete and six turbines have been delivered, the company, a unit of International Power Plc, said.

The Ontario government launched the most comprehensive and generous set of feed-in tariffs in North America in late 2009. Incentives guarantee sellers of electricity produced from the wind, sun, water and biomass fixed, above-market prices for 20 years.

National Grid and SSE to use electrical transformers to heat homes

LONDON - Thousands of homes could soon be warmed by the heat from giant electricity grid transformers for the first time as part of new plans to harness “waste heat” and cut carbon emissions from home heating.

Trials are due to begin on how to capture the heat generated by transmission network transformers, owned by National Grid, to provide home heating for households connected to district heating networks operated by SSE.

Currently, hot air is vented from the giant substations to help cool the transformers that help to control the electricity running through National Grid’s high-voltage transmission lines.

However, if the trial succeeds,…
