PowerStream Inc. announced they have chosen N-DimensionÂ’s Smart Grid Unified Threat Management product for its substation cyber security trials.

“PowerStream is always looking for ways to enhance its Smart Grid efforts, and this trial is an important element in our plans to continuously improve.” states Mark Henderson, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of PowerStream Inc. “We have had a long standing relationship with both N-Dimension Solutions and Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, and this exciting new product will expand our cyber security protection from our control centre to our field operations.”

PowerStream will trial N-Dimension SolutionsÂ’ new 340S Unified Threat Management system that is core to Utility defense-in-depth strategies to defend against cyber security breaches and to improve operational reliability in Smart Grid deployments.

N-Dimension Solutions designs, develops, and markets cyber security solutions that address the specific requirements of the Smart Grid for Utilities. N-Dimension SolutionÂ’s 340S software product has been integrated with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) SEL-1102 tough computer platform.

“Cyber security issues represent one of the largest roadblocks to Smart Grid progress for Utilities,” explains Doug Westlund, CEO of N-Dimension Solutions. “N-Dimension is very pleased to be working with world class entities such as PowerStream and SEL to solve these issues for secure and effective Smart Grid deployments.”

SEL introduced the worldÂ’s first digital relay in 1984 revolutionizing the power protection industry and has since developed a complete line of products and services.

“We are pleased that PowerStream is standardizing on the SEL-1102 as part of their cyber security solution. With a Mean Time Between Failure of over 70 years, and built to the same standards as protective relays, our tough computers are an excellent choice for cyber security appliances,” says Edmund O. Schweitzer, III Ph.D., President of Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories.

Central to this discussion are arguments in support of, or in opposition to, the traditional model versus that of the decentralized or “emerging” model. But this is a false choice. The only choice that needs making is how to best…
