Wind farm planned near Groton

A wind farm with 66 turbines is being planned near Groton under an agreement between Basin Electric Power Cooperative and a private company.

Florida-based NextEra Energy Resources, formerly known as FPL Energy, will build, own and operate the Day County Wind Farm. Basin Electric will purchase the electricity.

The wind farm is expected to cost $250 million and be operational in early 2010.

Basin Electric and NextEra Energy are partners in three other wind farms in North Dakota and one in South Dakota. North Dakota-based Basin Electric generates and transmits electricity to member rural electric systems in the Dakotas and other states.
