China ultra-supercritical coal plants mark rapid commissioning, with 600-MW and 1,000-MW units passing 168-hour full-load trials, featuring desulfurization, denitration, and offshore design, supporting grid reliability, efficiency, and Shanghai Expo 2010 power demand.

Two large-scale, coal-fired power projects designed by East China Electric Power Design Institute ECEPDI were successfully put into operation in East China recently.
Following the successful commissioning of the Nos. 2 and 1 ultra-supercritical, coal-fired, 600-megawatt MW units of Jiangsu Datang International Lvsigang Power Plant on March 6 and March 14, respectively, the No. 3 unit passed the 168-hour continuous, full-load trial operation and began commercial operations on March 31. Three 600-MW units commissioned in less than one month had created a record in China, said ECEPDI in its announcement. Jiangsu Datang Power International Lvsigang Power Plant is in Lvsigang Town, in the Nantong City of Jiangsu province. The project plans involve building four ultra-supercritical, coal-fired, 600-MW units amid recent NDRC coal plant approvals nationwide over the quarter, together with desulfurization and denitration devices in Phase I. Jiangsu Datang International Lvsigang Power Generation Company Limited, which is a subsidiary of Datang International Power Generation Company Limited, the listed flagship of China Datang Corporation, is responsible for the development and operation of the project, which is also the first off-shore power plant in China.
One week later, the No. 2 ultra-supercritical, coal-fired, 1,000-MW unit of Shanghai Caojing Power Plant passed the 168-hour continuous, full-load trial operation and began commercial operations on April 4. This is the second 1,000-MW unit successfully commissioned in the power plant, marking another ultra-supercritical unit milestone for the site, following the smooth commissioning of the No. 1 unit on January 12.
Shanghai Caojing Power Plant's 2,000-MW project is the first 1,000-MW-unit project invested by China Power Investment Corporation CPIC, aligning with broader power investment in China across the sector, and is an important composition in achieving the target of energy conservation and emission reduction in Shanghai. The project is also a power support project for Shanghai Expo 2010, while two 700-MW units at Three Gorges began operation recently to bolster national supply. ECEPDI signed the survey and engineering service contract with Shanghai Electric Power Company Limited, a listed subsidiary of CPIC, for the project in August 2007. A commissioning of the project could be an important contribution to the success of Shanghai Expo 2010, said ECEPDI.
