BC Grid Flexibility Funding supports Canadian clean-technology companies developing demand response, energy storage and distributed energy resources to shift loads, strengthen grid capacity, and test solutions through British Columbia pilots.
The Main Points
-
Up to $5 million is available for Canadian grid-flexibility technologies.
-
Funding targets demand response, storage and managed charging projects.
-
First application window closes October 30, 2026.
NorthX and BC Hydro have opened a funding opportunity worth up to $5 million for Canadian companies developing technologies that can make British Columbia's electricity system more flexible. The program is aimed at solutions that shift, shed, store or otherwise manage electricity demand as power use rises across the province.
The initiative focuses on behind-the-meter technologies that can be deployed at industrial facilities, commercial and institutional buildings, vehicle fleets and other customer locations. By changing when electricity is consumed or supplying stored energy during periods of system need, these tools could help customers manage consumption while providing the wider grid with added flexibility and capacity.
The new call is aligned with efforts to manage growing demand while making greater use of existing electricity infrastructure. Its focus on flexible demand complements the broader discussion around canada grid doubling plan 2050, where planning must account for both supply additions and changing patterns of electricity use.
Eligible projects may include demand response and flexible industrial loads, energy storage, dispatchable resources, distributed energy resources and virtual power plants. The program also identifies managed and bidirectional charging, including vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-everything applications, as priority areas. Energy-efficiency technologies that add operational flexibility, along with power electronics, sensing and integrated energy systems, are also within scope.
Funding is intended to help move technologies from development toward commercial deployment through demonstrations, pilots, field validation and utility integration testing. NorthX said selected companies may have opportunities to explore pilot projects or other early innovation work with BC Hydro, providing a route to test solutions under real-world operating conditions. This type of project support can sit alongside canada clean energy funding alberta saskatchewan initiatives while addressing British Columbia-specific capacity needs.
Individual investments will typically range from $250,000 to $1.5 million, and projects can receive up to 50% of eligible costs. Applicants must be Canadian-incorporated companies with technologies at technology readiness levels 4 through 9, a clear commercialization path, and meaningful emissions or electricity-system benefits. Priority will go to projects that can be demonstrated in British Columbia and reduce or shift demand, increase system capacity and flexibility, support industrial growth, improve affordability and reliability, or strengthen the provincial clean-technology supply chain.
The program supports BC Hydro's Power Smart 2.0 and Powering Growth plans, which include targets for 2,200 GWh in energy savings and 800 MW in capacity savings. Managing demand more actively may also inform how utilities assess available supply, including issues connected with bchydro surplus, as customer loads and system conditions change over time.
The first application window closes October 30, 2026, with funding decisions expected by the end of January 2027. Applications submitted after that deadline may be considered in the first quarter of 2027, subject to available funding. The call arrives as grid operators evaluate multiple ways to increase usable capacity, from customer-side flexibility to dynamic line rating rollout grid capacity and major network development such as hydro one 500 kv transmission projects oeb filings.
