Canada clean energy funding supports grid modernization, energy storage, renewables, transmission planning and efficiency in Alberta and Saskatchewan, with more than $26 million for 17 projects announced on July 4, 2026 in Calgary.

On July 4, 2026, in Calgary, Alberta, the federal Minister of Energy and Natural Resources announced more than $26 million for 17 clean energy projects across Alberta and Saskatchewan. The funding package is designed to accelerate deployment of clean technologies, modernize energy systems and infrastructure, reduce emissions, and build the regulatory, industrial, and workforce capacity needed for long-term growth and energy security on the Prairies.

The largest share, $14.9 million for 10 projects, will advance energy storage, solar and wind development, interprovincial electricity transmission planning, Indigenous-led clean energy initiatives, and workforce development. These priorities align with canada clean energy future, reinforcing how provinces can integrate variable resources while maintaining reliability across the grid.

A further $5.9 million is dedicated to engineering and design work for two facilities that will convert waste biomass to renewable natural gas with carbon capture. Another $3.5 million supports two projects aimed at reducing methane emissions from upstream oil and gas operations and advancing low-emissions cement alternatives that permanently store carbon. Complementary provincial developments, such as nova scotia evs, illustrate how electrification strategies are unfolding alongside industrial decarbonization across Canada.

Three additional projects will receive $2.3 million to support higher energy-efficiency building codes. The work will help provinces and municipalities adopt and implement advanced code pathways, giving builders, designers, and authorities clearer guidance for cost-effective performance improvements that produce measurable electricity and emissions benefits.

Most projects in this bundle are backed by the federal Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program, a multibillion-dollar initiative that supports grid modernization, storage, and renewable technologies in every region. Indigenous Services Canada is contributing $649,000 to electricity projects led by Indigenous groups to advance pre-development work for solar. These themes are reflected in bc on future energy, which explores regional pathways for clean power and industry in Western Canada.

The announcement also aligns with the National Electricity Strategy, which aims to double grid capacity by 2050, and builds on commitments made at the Energy and Mine Ministers Conference on June 26, 2026 to advance major intertie transmission projects linking Yukon-British Columbia, Alberta-British Columbia, Alberta-Saskatchewan, and Saskatchewan-Manitoba. Managing future load profiles, a topic examined in peak ev chargers, will be central as provinces plan for intertie-enabled electrification and system flexibility.

Taken together, the measures announced in Calgary aim to stabilize energy costs, reduce emissions, attract investment, and position Alberta and Saskatchewan to deliver reliable, affordable electricity through the energy transition.
