Portland General Electric Co. said its customers are receiving electricity from its largest renewable energy project to date at the Biglow Canyon wind farm.
PGE said the 217 wind turbines at the 25,000-acre site can produce 450 megawatts of energy, though consumers can expect an average of 150 MW from the project given the variability of wind power.
Oregon requires the energy company to rely on renewable energy to generate 15 percent of its electricity by 2015 and 25 percent by 2025.
The $1 billion project was built over three development phases starting in 2007. The Biglow Canyon wind farm will generate enough power to meet the demands of roughly 125,000 homes, the company said.
